Good day! In the plant spotlight today is a delicious one: Liquorice, or licorice.
The botanical name of this plant is Glycyrrhiza Glabra.
The root of liquorice is where the medicinal properties are concentrated. The flavor is sweet and aromatic, which makes it delicious on top of being good for your health! Liquorice root is considered adaptogenic, meaning that it helps your body adapt to any stressors you might be under - physical or mental. It's a natural anti-inflammatory and is great for digestive health, with studies showing that the root can help relieve symptoms of indigestion. Some studies have also shown liquorice root helping to relieve ulcers by increasing mucus production and reducing inflammation.
You'll often find liquorice root in tea blends, but if you can find it in its raw form, you can chew on the root sticks to use it as a mouth freshener. It works as a natural toothbrush too!
Have a magical day,
Jenny
PLANT INGESTION WARNING!
As with all herbs and plants you plan to ingest, never ingest them before doing your own research and/or talking with your doctor - it’s possible that medications you take or health conditions you have could have a negative effect if paired with liquorice. Better safe than sorry!
