American Skullcap aka Scutellaria Lateriflora

Good day! This week we have a plant to help with nerves: American Skullcap.

The Latin name of this plant is Scutellaria lateriflora.

This plant is in the mint family along with peppermint and lemon balm! Skullcap stimulates gamma-aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter that helps calm nerves in the brain. Because of this, skullcap is known as a calming sedative herb, and can be used for nervous tension, insomnia, and irritability. When ingested in its concentrated forms, it promotes calm and relaxation, reduces restlessness, muscle tensions or spasms, and tension headaches. It's basically known as a natural nerve tonic.

Skullcap is a gentle but effective herb, and because of its calming and soothing properties, it's a great herb to use for relieving overall tension in both the mind and body. If you're struggling with racing thoughts and are unable to sleep, try taking skullcap in tea or tincture form for a couple weeks to see if it brings you some mental and physical relief to allow you to sleep more easily. It's suggested to take it about an hour before you plan to go to sleep to see the best results.

Have a magical day,
Jenny

PLANT INGESTION WARNING!
As with all herbs and plants you plan to ingest, never ingest them before doing your own research and/or talking with your doctor - it’s possible that medications you take or health conditions you have could have a negative effect if paired with skullcap. Better safe than sorry!
