Good day! Continuing into my journey of plant research, I've got Lemon Balm as the topic today.
The Latin name of this plant is Melissa officinalis.
Lemon balm is in the mint family. The leaves of this plant have a mild lemon scent, which makes it easy to identify. Lemon balm is a calming herb that’s considered a nervine, which means it can be helpful in easing anxiety and lessening nervous system agitation. These effects aren’t overly sedating, which is helpful if you’re just looking for some slight anxiety relief. This herb wouldn’t be of much use if you’re suffering from severe anxiety or have a nervous system that’s completely out of whack! But for a bit of relief from dysregulation during a regular day, lemon balm is a perfect herb choice. Because it brings some calming relief from the feeling of anxiety, it can also help with insomnia.
This plant is also a pain reliever! It's known to reduce discomfort from indigestion, and can bring relief from the discomfort of tooth aches when ingested in the form of a tea, or by chewing the leaves. To get the most benefit from this plant when used in a tea form, use fresh leaves instead of dried.
Have a magical day!
Jenny
PLANT INGESTION WARNING!
As with all herbs and plants you plan to ingest, never ingest them before doing your own research and/or talking with your doctor - it’s possible that medications you take or health conditions you have could have a negative effect if paired with lemon balm. Better safe than sorry!
